Ninety Degrees in May
It’s May 21st and we’re expecting a 90 degree day! It’s hot and humid and feels more like the middle of summer. Mary and I got up early (9AM is early for us) and headed to the patch to give the plants a drink so that they don’t dry out from the heat. We were out there for an hour and started to feel fatigue from the heat. It’s HOT out there today and it’s important to keep the soil around the plants moist so that the roots can keep moving and growing which will allow the plant to take full advantage of this sun and hopefully lead to more pumpkins!
Greg had mentioned that now is a good time to start giving the plants some nitrogen to help jump start the growing process. Last year I used fish emulsion (it smells like cat fish bait that’s been sitting in the sun for a week) and I couldn’t really tell if it helped very much, but my soil quality was horrible last year, so I’m sure I’ll see more of an impact this year with the added compost.
